July 9: Judging a Contest

I recently finished judging a nature writing contest.  It was an eye-opening experience.  Out of many essays, I found a clear-cut winner.  The essay was smart, well-written, lyrical, and moving.  Head and shoulders above all the other entrants.

There are five judges in this contest.  I am one voice among many.  Last year, in this same contest, I placed second.  I was told that I missed winning by just a few points.  It's all about the math now.  Five scores added together.  Maybe the essay I selected will win.  Maybe it will end up being first honorable mention.  It's out of my hands now.
