June 1: Gonna Kill You, New Poem, "Thunderstorm Warning on Corpus Christi," New Cartoon

She wouldn't take it off, though.  You can't make her do something if she doesn't want to.  All she kept saying was, "Daddy's gonna kill you."  You could hardly understand her with that goddam pillow over her head.

Phoebe has just figured out that Holden has been kicked out of school again in the above passage.  She's covered her head with a pillow and is refusing to look at or talk with Holden.  She's simply saying "Daddy's gonna kill you" over and over.  Obviously, Holden getting expelled from Pencey Prep is simply the latest in a series of academic failures for him.  Holden's father, a successful lawyer and chronic workaholic, is going to come down on Holden hard.

I love my daughter, but she has a problem following through on responsibilities sometimes.  She loses parts of expensive dance costumes.  She forgets to turn in homework assignments.  She doesn't remember when concerts and dance practices are.  Since she was young, I've noticed this pattern of behavior with her.  I've suspected for a long time that she suffers from ADHD.  It's hard to keep her focused, unless it's on her iPod or Kindle (and those are just extensions of her distractions--multimedia explosions of sound and images).  Despite a few tough academic scrapes, she's coped pretty well in school.

This morning, my daughter told me she forgot to turn in an important form and check yesterday at school.  It's not the end of the world, but I sort of felt like Mr. Caulfield.  Exasperated.  Angry.  Tired.  Disappointed.  I thought the trials of school were behind me for a few months.  Now, on Monday, we're going to have to call the school office and see where we go from here.  As I said, tiring.

When my daughter told me she forgot to turn it in, my response wasn't great.  At first, I thought she was joking.  Yesterday morning, the last thing I told her on the phone was, "Don't forget to turn in that form and check."  It was the only really important thing she had to remember to do on the last day of school.  This morning, I just stood looking at her, shaking my head, saying, "You're kidding, right?"  Then I think I slammed a few things around.  I may have even cursed a little bit under my breath.  Daddy's gonna kill you.  I know I made her feel horrible, and (I'm sort of ashamed to say this) I wanted her to feel horrible.

As I said, it's not the end of the world.  On Monday, my wife will probably drive up to the school and hand in the form and check.  (My daughter doesn't even know where it is right now.)  I'm pissed that we have to go through this extra effort.  I don't like looking irresponsible.  I don't like my daughter being irresponsible.

That's what's been on my mind all day.  I do have a new poem for you.  It is Beatnik Saturday, so drag out your berets and bongos.

Saint Marty's not gonna kill his daughter.  He's just going to make her suffer a little bit.

Thunderstorm Warning on Corpus Christi

It crawls across the bottom of TVs.  It's announced with blasts of rusty trumpet on radios.  A warning.  Something severe approaches.  Thirty miles per hour.  Filled with hail large as bird skulls, winds strong as whale fluke.  In pews, we ignore the shift from Genesis three to two, light to void.  Sing hymns of wheat, blood.  Thousands fed with five buns, two cans of tuna.  This is the Word.

Then it hits.  A flood against the stained glass window Christ.  He's crying now.  Sweating the Jordan.  Thunder.  So loud the priest stops mid-blessing.  Stands before the table, counting place settings, nervous.  As if God has just knocked on the door and is waiting for him to say, "Come in."

May 25: Beatnik Saturday, New Poem, "Extreme Unction," New Cartoon

This Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, I'm looking forward to three days of relaxation.  Well, I'll relax as much as I can relax.  I still have to play the pipe organ for two church services (one tonight, one tomorrow morning).  I still have to write some blog posts, and I have a book I want to finish reading this weekend.  That's my definition of relaxation.

I have a new poem for you today.  This one's been sitting and percolating in my head for a couple of weeks, slowly taking shape.

Saint Marty can't wait to have some barbecue this weekend.

Extreme Unction

Swaddled by AIDS in hospital bed.
Unlimbed by bombs in Afghanistan.
Unhinged by helix in mind.
Stunned by stroke, macheted by Hutu.
Unbreasted by cancer, unvoiced by dictator.
Addicted by birth, unmemoried by age.
Jack Kennedy at Parkland Memorial,
wide-eyed on the stretcher,
Jackie staring into his wrecked face.
Twenty six at Sandy Hook,
taken on a sunny December morning
just before Christmas break.
My father sits with them all,
the wounded, ruined, helpless,
waits for the priest's prayer and oil.
To the man in black, he whispers,
This is for my wife, accepts it,
carries it home on his foreheard,
cupped in his palms, like winter
run-off.  He gives it to my mother,
pours it over her feet, legs, hands, head.
He hopes she will jump out of her chair
and start cooking him liver and onions
the way she did when they were first
married, standing in front of the stove,
singing a Doris Day song, hair wrapped
in a blue kerchief, hips swaying,
looking as if she will live forever.

May 18: Red Hunting Hat, Beatnik Saurday, New Poem, "May Snow," New Cartoon

You wouldn't even have known it had snowed at all.  There was hardly any snow on the sidewalks.  But it was freezing cold, and I took my red hunting hat out of my pocket and put it on--I didn't give a damn how I looked.  I even put the earlaps down...

It's around fifty degrees outside this morning.  That's quite a change from last Saturday when I woke up to about three inches of snow on the ground.  Of course, the snow didn't last long.  As Holden says in the above passage, "you wouldn't even have known it had snowed at all."  I've been able to go running almost every day this week, and I don't run in cold weather.  I didn't need a red hunting hat with earlaps.

Today is Beatnik Saturday, and I have a new poem to share with you.  I wrote it earlier this week.  It was inspired by last Saturday's surprise storm.  Snow this far into spring puts me in a reflective mood.  (It also pisses me off, but let's not go there.)

Anyway, put on your berets.  Turn down the lights.

Saint Marty would like to share with you his...

May Snow

This morning reminds me
of my grandmother's cheek
just before she died,
how her skin pearled, pooled
on her face, fresh snow,
translucent and temporal
over the blood and bone beneath.
She inhaled like dogwood
surprised by ice, each green
breath stunned and cold.
And when time came
for the sun to rise, I could see
the shift in her ground,
how she settled into morning light,
accepted the changes:  grass
pushing through night's white dust,
a worm working the thawed
soil, waiting to be plucked
by the first bird of the day.

May 13: Magic 8-Ball Monday, Summer Schedule, Something New

Well, with only my instincts and the statistics from the good people at Blogger, I have finalized the summer schedule for Saint Marty.  Either you, my disciples, are completely happy with the current offerings of this blog, or you're totally apathetic.  Either way, it's time to shake things up a little bit.

Without further adieu, here is the new daily line-up for SMN (the Saint Marty Network):

Monday:  Magic 8-Ball Monday.  Monday posts will essentially remain the same.  I will be using whatever book is my focus for the year (for 2013, it's The Catcher in the Rye) as my Magic 8-Ball.  I will ask a burning life question, randomly flip through the book, and find my answer in its pages.

Tuesday:  Prayer of the Week.  I will highlight my prayer focus for the week on each Tuesday and compose a prayer.  Amen.

Wednesday:  Worry Wednesday.  These posts will stay the same.  I like being able to vent or bitch about my life at least once a week.

Thursday:  A Piece of My Mind.  I took a class in high school called Current Events.  Every Thursday in that class, we chose a topic from the news or popular culture and talked about it.  That's what Thursdays will be this summer.  I will be giving everybody a piece of my mind, for what it's worth, about some current event.

Friday:  Fairy Tale Friday.  Every Friday, I will write a new fairy tale.  I wrote a fairy tale a little while ago, and it was really popular.  Plus I had fun doing it.  Stay tuned for more "Once upon a times..."

Saturday:  Beatnik Saturday.  I will publish an original poem every Saturday, as well as my weekend installments of the Confessions of Saint Marty cartoon strip.

Sunday:  Classic Saint Marty.  I've published over 1300 posts on Saint Marty.  A few of them have to be worth reading again.  On Sundays, I will choose some of my favorite posts (classics) and re-post them.  To tell you the truth, I don't remember half the stuff I've written.

So there you have it.  That's what you have to look forward to for the next four or so months.  If I eliminated one of your favorite Saint Marty features, let me know.  I'm always open to flattery and cajoling.

My question for Magic 8-Ball Monday today is:

Will this summer schedule bring a lot of readers to Saint Marty?

And the answer from the book of Salinger:

"...The whole arrangement's designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn't supply them with.  Or they thought their own environment couldn't supply them with.  So they gave up looking.  They gave it up before they ever really even got started.  You follow me?"

I'm not sure if that answer means that I should give up before I even get started with this new plan or that I should move forward with it, unlike the guys who surrender so easily.  I think I'll go with the latter interpretation, since I've never been much of a quitter.

Now if Saint Marty can just come up with a catchy logo for the SMN.

I think this one's already taken
